Forum

Leave a comment here for general discussion.

Since Blogger doesn't formally have a forum system, we're just going to use this post as a place for generally discussion. I'll open another post for upgrades and other side conversations. But feel free to post questions and answers here about the Voy! You can also leave comments on the other pages, like the manual one and the parts one.

Comment moderation is turned on to keep spam out, so if you post a comment and don't see it immediately, just know that I'll approve it soon!

Here's a handy diagram for referencing parts:

Troubleshooting

Want more speed on your Voy? Before you upgrade the motor, check the following:
  • Check for a damaged fuse (Replace with a 20 Amp, miniature fuse 3/16" X 3/4")
  • Inflate front and rear wheels to 35 PSI
  • Check that the rear wheel band brake is not too tight. Loosen the two screws a half turn, and try the throttle. Make sure you are still able to stop fully.
  • Check for bloated batteries. Have you been charging your Voy properly? If you're not getting at least 12 MPH on level road, your batteries may be old or damaged.

Upgrades / Hacks / Mods

Overvolt
Warning: This may cause irreversible damage to your Voy. This can fry the controller or worse, the motor.

An overvolt mod involves adding a fourth battery to your Voy. Some add the fourth battery under the seat. The voltage of the Voy is 36, but the controller will accept somewhere around 40-42 before cutting out. If you have an older 12V lead acid battery, you can add the battery to your set of three in series.

Replace rear wheel and controller
This is the most cost effective choice. Most people that find this page are looking for more speed to climb hills, or keep pace with city traffic.

Don't forget that the Voy is a low power electric bicycle at heart. It was produced early on before more powerful 400-600 watt electric motors could be sold cheaply.

Because the Voy is a bicycle at heart, that means you can easily replace the rear wheel, with an Electric Bicycle conversion kit for 16" wheels. The controller will have to be replaced in the process, but you can use your existing batteries and the Voy's bicycle frame.

Batteries

How to find batteries for your Voy:

The Voy uses three 12V sealed lead acid batteries joined in series, making the total voltage 36. These are not rare, and they are the standard batteries used in cars, alarm systems and boats. All you need to do is find the right shape and size. So don't be fooled if you see an online special for "rare" Voy batteries.

Ask your local car repair shop if they can order the batteries for you. Home depot and other like stores may be able to help you too. Ordering online is always an option, but shipping will be expensive since these lead acid batteries are very heavy. Try to find them locally first. Any place that carries car batteries can order them for you.

Voy battery specifications:
  • 12 Volt, 10 AH*
  • Length: 6 inches (152mm)
  • Width: 4 inches (102mm)
  • Height: 3¾ inches (95mm)
*The Amp Hours (AH) will determine the range of your Voy. 10 Amp Hours should be the minimum rating you should install. 12 is recommended, more is better. But a higher AH rating won't make your Voy go any faster.

How to properly charge your batteries:

Sealed lead acid batteries are completely different than Lithium Ion technology used in your cell phone and laptops. Here are the basic rules:

  1. Never run your Voy battery all down to the low zone. Doing so will permanently hurt the life of the batteries.
  2. Recharge as soon as you can. Even for short rides. Lead acid batteries live longer this way.
  3. Don't charge for more than 10 hours. Your charger may have a built in cut-off, but most chargers are cheap and simply supply voltage. Unplug as soon as the charging LED has changed to full/complete.
